Google LLC Negotiates $1.5 Billion Talent Deal with Mechanize

Google LLC is negotiating a deal worth more than $1.5 billion with Mechanize, a San Francisco-based startup specializing in AI coding agents. The proposed agreement uses a hybrid structure where Google LLC would hire Mechanize personnel to focus on model evaluation and development while securing a non-exclusive license for the startup's technology.

This strategic move aims to bolster Google LLC's AI coding capabilities to better compete with rivals OpenAI and Anthropic. By opting for a talent-and-licensing arrangement rather than a traditional merger, Google LLC seeks to acquire specialized expertise and technology while avoiding the antitrust scrutiny typically triggered by full acquisitions.

Mechanize was founded by CEO Tamay Besiroglu and has received backing from investors including Patrick Collison and Nat Friedman. The startup's broader objective is to automate software engineering and eventually expand into other forms of complex economic work.
