Vue Entertainment CEO Reports Resurgence in Global Cinema Demand
Vue Entertainment CEO Guy reports a cinema recovery driven by record-breaking blockbusters and a significant increase in Gen Z and millennial attendance.
Cinema demand is resurging as the industry overcomes a supply shortage caused by the pandemic and poorly timed strikes. Guy, the CEO of Vue Entertainment, reports that the recovery is driven by an unprecedented volume of releases across all genres. Three major films—Toy Story 5, Odyssey, and Spider-Man—each surpassed $1 billion at the box office.
Attendance trends show a 30% to 40% global increase among Gen Z viewers attending for social reasons, while millennials are returning for escapism. Guy notes that the industry has faced a supply issue rather than a demand issue. This shift is supported by increased investment from tech giants Amazon and Apple, as well as David Ellison, who increased Paramount's annual movie output from roughly eight to 15 films.
There is also a growing preference for premium large format screens. Vue's own epic screen technology has outgrossed IMAX by approximately 20% on a per-screen basis over the last year, while IMAX screens generated 20% of the total gross for the film Odyssey.
