Michigan Democrats Vote in Gubernatorial Primary Election

Michigan voters head to the polls Tuesday for the Democratic primary to determine the party's nominee for governor. The contest features Jocelyn Benson, the Secretary of State, and Chris Swanson, the Sheriff of Genesee County.

Benson has centered her campaign on the Affordable Michigan Agenda, which focuses on reducing housing and healthcare costs and increasing wages for early childhood education and childcare workers. Her platform also includes a five-pillar education plan intended to expand opportunity for families.

Swanson is prioritizing public safety and school security. His proposals include the creation of a Governor's Human Oppression Strike Team, the enforcement of extreme risk protection orders, and infrastructure upgrades for schools. Additionally, Swanson is promoting a seven-point education plan that emphasizes K-12 funding, pre-K options, student meals, and the integration of trades into middle school curricula.
