Taiwan Defense Minister Says Chinese Sanctions Won't Hinder Armaments

Defense Minister Wellington Koo stated that Chinese sanctions on European suppliers will not obstruct Taiwan's weapons procurement due to diversified sourcing channels.

Taiwanese Defense Minister Wellington Koo announced on April 27, 2026, that recent Chinese sanctions against seven European companies would not hinder the island's ability to source weaponry. The sanctions, issued by China's Ministry of Commerce on April 24, banned the export of dual-use items to these firms—including four Czech companies—after they engaged in arms sales to Taiwan.

Koo stated that Taiwan maintains diversified procurement channels and continues to rely heavily on the United States for its defense needs. He clarified that despite Japan's recent decision to scrap restrictions on overseas arms sales, Taiwan cannot currently purchase Japanese weapons. This limitation exists because the two nations have not yet signed a defense equipment and technology transfer agreement, though Koo did not rule out such an agreement in the future.
