Mexican Democratic Pioneer Cuauhtémoc Cárdenas Dies at 92

President Claudia Sheinbaum confirmed the death of Cuauhtémoc Cárdenas, a three-time presidential candidate who led Mexico's transition toward a multi-party democracy.

President Claudia Sheinbaum confirmed the death of Cuauhtémoc Cárdenas on Wednesday at the age of 92. Sheinbaum described the three-time presidential candidate as a man of firm principles who led a peaceful democratic movement.

The son of former President Lázaro Cárdenas, Cárdenas began his political career in the Institutional Revolutionary Party. He broke away from the party following a 1988 presidential bid that was widely regarded as fraudulent, later co-founding the Democratic Revolution Party in 1989. In 1997, he became the first popularly elected mayor of Mexico City.

Throughout his career, Cárdenas challenged one-party rule and helped establish democratic institutions in Mexico. Former presidents Andrés Manuel López Obrador and Vicente Fox praised his legacy, with Fox noting that while they were political adversaries, they were united by the conviction that Mexico deserved complete democracy.
