Hans Hasselby-Andersen Details Risks of Starting Merus Audio

Hans Hasselby-Andersen describes liquidating personal assets and facing investor rejection to launch Merus Audio during the 2008 financial crisis.

Hans Hasselby-Andersen, the CEO of Lotus Microsystems and cofounder of Merus Audio, detailed the personal and financial sacrifices required to launch his first semiconductor startup during the 2008 financial crisis. After resigning from Texas Instruments, Hasselby-Andersen funded his early operations by selling his car and apartment, cashing out his pension, and utilizing a bank overdraft.

To validate market demand for energy-efficient speaker drivers, he traveled to Singapore, Japan, and South Korea. He spent nearly a year pitching to between 50 and 100 investors before successfully establishing Merus Audio. The company operated until its acquisition by Infineon Technologies in 2017.

Drawing from this experience, Hasselby-Andersen advises first-time founders to double their expected timelines and financial runways to prevent running out of cash before reaching critical milestones. He noted that if a founder believes a goal can be achieved in two or three years, they should multiply that estimate by at least two.
