SpaceX and xAI Compete for $100 Million Pentagon Drone Prize

The United States Department of Defense has launched a secretive $100 million prize challenge to develop voice-controlled, autonomous drone swarming technology. The six-month competition, jointly managed by the Defense Innovation Unit and the Defense Autonomous Warfare Group within the U.S. Special Operations Command, aims to create software that translates spoken commands into digital instructions to coordinate drone swarms across air and sea domains.

Space Exploration Technologies Corp. and its subsidiary xAI are competing to develop the entire system, including target awareness and the launch-to-termination phases. This follows a February merger between the two companies and a $200 million contract to integrate xAI's Grok chatbot into government systems. While other firms are participating—such as Applied Intuition, which is receiving limited support from OpenAI—SpaceX and xAI are pursuing the full project scope. xAI has reportedly been recruiting engineers with high-level security clearances to support the effort.

The initiative aligns with the Pentagon's January AI Acceleration Strategy and the broader Replicator program to integrate AI agents into battlefield planning. This shift marks a departure for Elon Musk, who in 2015 signed an open letter advocating for a global ban on offensive autonomous weapons. Amidst this development, Democratic senators have requested that Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth investigate SpaceX regarding alleged Chinese investments.
