Melrose Industries Sets $100 Million Fund for California Incident

Melrose Industries PLC established a $100 million claims fund for residents and businesses affected by a chemical tank overheat at its Garden Grove facility.

Melrose Industries PLC announced a claims programme providing up to $100 million for residents and businesses impacted by a May incident at its Garden Grove facility in Orange County, California. The event occurred when a tank of methyl methacrylate overheated, creating an explosion risk that forced the evacuation of more than 50,000 people.

The Orange County district attorney's office has closed its investigation into the matter and will not pursue criminal charges, though the company remains subject to potential civil penalties. Melrose expects to resume full manufacturing operations by September 28, provided it receives the necessary safety and regulatory approvals.

Financial reactions to the disclosure were mixed. JPMorgan reduced its 2026 and 2027 free cash flow forecasts to account for the £74 million cost. Conversely, Citi described the move as a positive step that quantifies the financial impact and reduces risk for investors. Shares of Melrose rose 11% following the announcement.
