Technical Fault Disrupts Italy Air Traffic Control Services

ENAV implemented flow restrictions across Italy after a data transmission network fault reduced air traffic management capacity by 50 percent on Friday.

A technical fault in the data transmission network supporting Italy's nationwide air traffic control services caused major flight disruptions on Friday, October 16, 2026. ENAV, the air navigation service provider, reported that network problems emerged overnight, forcing the implementation of flow restrictions starting at 06:00 local time to maintain safe operations.

These measures reduced air traffic management capacity by 50 percent, leading to numerous flight delays and cancellations across the country. At Rome's Fiumicino airport, officials cancelled four departing flights to Milan Linate, Riyadh, Tirana, and Trieste, while approximately 20 other flights faced delays.

ENAV ruled out cyberattacks or sabotage as the cause of the fault. In response to the disruptions, airport operators Aeroporti di Roma and SEA advised passengers to monitor flight statuses directly with their airlines.
