President John Mahama Visits Jamaica to Advance Reparations and Trade

President John Dramani Mahama will conduct a four-day official visit to Jamaica from August 2 to 5, 2026. The trip aims to strengthen diplomatic and historical ties between Ghana and the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) while advancing the global campaign for reparations regarding the transatlantic slave trade.

In Kingston, President Mahama will hold bilateral talks with Prime Minister Andrew Holness focused on trade, investment, and South-South cooperation. His itinerary includes addressing a joint sitting of the Houses of Parliament and touring the Kingston Freeport to position Ghana as a strategic gateway for CARICOM's engagement with Africa. He is also scheduled to meet with Opposition Leader Mark Golding and participate in a Trade and Investment Dialogue.

A central component of the visit is a high-level Reparations Dialogue at the University of the West Indies, Mona Campus, where Mahama will engage with Sir Hilary Beckles. The visit follows Ghana's recent delivery of relief assistance to Jamaica after a major natural disaster. Additional engagements include attending the Mello-Go-Roun cultural event for Jamaica's 64th Independence Anniversary and visiting the Ghanaian Village Houses at Seville Heritage Park in St Ann.
