UK Launches Warm Home Loans for Energy Upgrades
The UK government launched the Warm Home Loans scheme to provide households with low-interest loans for solar panels and heat pump installations.
The Government of the United Kingdom launched the Warm Home Loans scheme on Tuesday, offering households interest-free or low-interest loans between £7,500 and £35,000. The program funds energy-efficient upgrades, including the installation of batteries, solar panels, and ground-source or air-source heat pumps, with the goal of reducing annual energy bills by up to £550.
Energy Secretary Miatta Fahnbulleh stated that the government-supported loans allow families to upgrade their homes with no upfront costs. To facilitate the rollout, energy suppliers British Gas and E.On partnered with lenders Tandem Bank and Homeserve. Chris Norbury, Chief Executive of E.On UK, noted that the scheme removes barriers to adopting low-carbon technologies.
The launch precedes the first budget from Chancellor John Healey. Treasury concerns that existing subsidies primarily benefit middle-class households are expected to lead to a scale-back of the boiler upgrade grant scheme. However, grants of up to £9,000 will likely remain available for homes not connected to the gas grid and can be used alongside the new loans.
