Left Democratic Front Gains Seats in Kerala Byelections

The Left Democratic Front (LDF) increased its seat count from 15 to 18 in local body byelections held across 12 districts in Kerala on September 28. The LDF captured seven wards previously held by the United Democratic Front (UDF), including the Mangalam-Mundakkal ward and Anchuthengu block panchayat division in Thiruvananthapuram. In Palakkad, the LDF secured the Chittur-Paruthikkavu ward through a draw of lots following a tie.

The United Democratic Front saw its tally drop from 22 to 19 seats, marking a setback in the first electoral test for the government of Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan. While the UDF captured four wards previously held by the Left and retained the Kuttichira ward in Kozhikode, it experienced a sharp erosion of winning margins in several areas, including the Pallikkal division of the Mananthavady block panchayat.

Twenty20, an ally of the National Democratic Alliance, retained its single seat. The LDF characterized the results as political relief following a previous severe defeat in the Assembly elections.
