American Airlines Reports Record Revenue Amid Fuel Cost Losses
American Airlines Group Inc. posted record third-quarter revenue of $16.3 billion but suffered a $269 million net loss due to surging fuel expenses.
American Airlines Group Inc. reported record third-quarter 2026 total revenue of $16.3 billion, a 19.3% increase year-over-year. The growth was driven by strong demand across all geographies and cabins, including a 22.9% rise in premium revenue and a 27.6% increase in managed corporate revenue. Despite these gains, the company posted a GAAP net loss of $269 million, primarily caused by a $1.9 billion increase in fuel expenses.
This trend of surging fuel costs affected other major U.S. carriers. United Airlines reported a net income of $1 billion on $17.9 billion in revenue, while Southwest Airlines achieved record operating revenue of $8.4 billion and a net income of $270 million. However, all three carriers forecast significantly higher fuel costs for the fourth quarter, leading American Airlines to lower its full-year outlook and United Airlines to project earnings below Wall Street expectations.
To offset pressures and improve customer experience, American is expanding Starlink Wi-Fi to over 1,000 aircraft and increasing premium seating on narrowbody aircraft to 40%. For the fourth quarter, the company expects revenue growth between 19.5% and 22.5%, though it anticipates average fuel prices will rise to approximately $4.70 per gallon, which may slow network growth in 2027.
