King Haakon VIII Leads Memorial for Late King Harald V

King Haakon VIII led a memorial service for his father, King Harald V, who died Friday at age 89 after a 35-year reign.

Following the death of King Harald V on Friday, King Haakon VIII led his family in a memorial service at Asker Church on Sunday. King Harald V died at age 89 after being hospitalized since August 17 with haemolytic anaemia.

In his first live broadcast as monarch, King Haakon VIII vowed to lead Norway with dedication and promised to risk everything for the nation's freedom and independence. He is scheduled to swear an oath of allegiance in parliament on Tuesday. Norway has entered a period of mourning, with flags flown at half-mast and thousands of citizens leaving tributes at the Royal Palace in Oslo.

The transition to the new reign occurs amid family scandals involving Queen Mette-Marit's past association with Jeffrey Epstein and the rape conviction of her son, Marius Borg Høiby.
