House Republicans Probe New Jersey Noncitizen Voter Registrations

House Republicans launched an investigation into New Jersey's voter registration process after Governor Mikie Sherrill admitted that approximately 6,600 noncitizens were mistakenly added to voter rolls between June 2023 and June 2024. Sherrill stated that around 400 of these individuals successfully voted, attributing the mistake to a software failure in the state's Motor Vehicle Commission system.

The software vendor, IDEMIA, refuted the governor's claim and asserted that state agencies were responsible for the errors. In response to the admission, House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan and Committee on House Administration Chairman Bryan Steil requested documents from Lt. Governor Dale Caldwell to assess the state's compliance with federal laws, including the Help America Vote Act.

Simultaneously, the Department of Homeland Security identified four noncitizens who illegally voted in New Jersey, some of whom face charges for making false statements regarding their naturalization. While Republicans are using the incident to advocate for stricter federal standards via the SAVE America Act, Senator Cory Booker argued that the legislation would not have prevented this specific registration error.
