Volvo Cars Plans Electric Sedans and Wagons for 2028 US Return

Volvo Cars is evaluating the 2028 return of electric midsize sedans and station wagons to the U.S. market to diversify its SUV-heavy lineup.

Volvo Cars is evaluating the introduction of all-electric midsize sedans and station wagons to the United States market by 2028. This potential move would reverse the company's recent strategy of selling exclusively crossovers and SUVs in America, following the discontinuation of the S90, V60, and V90 Cross Country models between 2025 and early 2026.

The upcoming vehicles would utilize the 800-volt SPA3 architecture, the same platform used for the EX60. While not officially confirmed, the models may be badged as the EV60 and ES60, with a rugged Cross Country wagon variant also under consideration. The vehicles are reportedly being developed for the European market first before being exported to North America.

CEO Hakan Samuelsson indicated the shift is driven by a generational change in younger buyers seeking alternatives to oversized SUVs and the superior aerodynamic efficiency of sedans and wagons for electric range. The move may also be intended to capture market demand left by Polestar, which must exit the U.S. market after the 2027 model year due to United States Department of Commerce restrictions on Chinese software.

Volvo Cars projects modest combined annual sales of approximately 10,000 units in the U.S., with starting prices expected in the low-$50,000 range.
