James Talarico Leads Ken Paxton in Texas Senate Race

Democratic State Representative James Talarico holds a five-point lead over Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton in a July poll by Texas Public Opinion Research, marking his largest lead of the general election period. Talarico leads 45% to 40%, drawing significant support from independents, Black and Latino voters, and non-college-educated voters. Talarico maintains a fundraising advantage of $21.5 million compared to Paxton's $7.5 million.

Talarico has intensified attacks on Paxton's ethics, accusing the Attorney General of voting illegally in six consecutive elections using a former address. This allegation follows reports from ProPublica and The Texas Tribune regarding Paxton's residency during the March Republican primary. The Collin County Democratic Party has filed a formal complaint with the Texas secretary of state seeking an investigation into the matter. Talarico also criticized Paxton's handling of a child sexual abuse case involving lawyer Adam Hoffman, citing a misdemeanor plea deal as evidence of preferential treatment.

Paxton has dismissed the corruption claims as distractions and refused to answer questions regarding his residency, focusing instead on law enforcement endorsements. Campaign spokesperson Madison Cercy defended Paxton, framing the accusations as attacks from the permanent political class. Republicans intend to consolidate support by highlighting Talarico's progressive social views, while Democrats aim to leverage Paxton's legal scandals. Early voting is scheduled to begin October 19.
