Bangladesh Signals Interest in Joining Makkah Joint Defence Agreement

The Government of Bangladesh has signaled it is open to joining the Makkah Joint Defence Agreement, a mutual defense pact signed on August 7, 2026, by Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Pakistan. Under the agreement, an armed attack on one member is treated as an attack on all. Foreign Affairs Adviser Humayun Kabir and State Minister Humaiun Kobir stated that Dhaka is viewing the prospect positively, though any final decision will be guided by a "Bangladesh First" approach to prioritize national interests and global trade dynamics.

This strategic shift follows the August 2024 ouster of Sheikh Hasina and a subsequent effort by Dhaka to diversify its security options. Bangladesh has recently increased its import of Turkish military equipment, resumed Pakistani military training for its personnel, and expressed interest in JF-17 fighter aircraft. Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is expected to visit Saudi Arabia soon following an invitation from Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

India has responded with muted diplomacy but views the potential alignment with concern. Indian officials are monitoring the creation of a security architecture on its eastern border, specifically regarding the vulnerable Chicken's Neck corridor and the Bay of Bengal. Reports indicate Prime Minister Narendra Modi has coordinated with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to address the rise of this Sunni-identity bloc.

Internally, some critics warn that the collective-defense clause could compromise Bangladesh's independent foreign policy. Concerns have been raised that the pact could draw Dhaka into Middle Eastern conflicts, potentially threatening energy security and shipping routes through the Strait of Hormuz and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait.
