Israel Launches Ground Incursions and Airstrikes in Southern Lebanon

The Israel Defense Forces launched a series of ground incursions, artillery strikes, and airspace breaches across southern Lebanon between August 9 and August 11, 2026. On Monday, Israeli forces advanced into the town of Khiam and the western outskirts of Mays al-Jabal, where they set fire to multiple homes. Drones were also reported flying over Beirut and the Zahrani area.

Between Friday and Sunday, the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) recorded 455 projectiles fired into southern Lebanon and 97 breaches of Lebanese airspace, primarily by drones, helicopters, and fighter jets. Saturday marked the highest single-day total since June 21, with 229 projectiles. UNIFIL stated these actions violate Security Council Resolution 1701. In response, the Lebanese Armed Forces and UNIFIL neutralized illegal weapons, including a 107mm rocket launcher, in Sector East and Sector West.

These escalations occur despite a ceasefire effective since April 16 and ongoing U.S.-sponsored border discussions in Rome. The Government of Lebanon reports that military aggression since March 2 has resulted in 4,335 deaths, 12,277 injuries, and the displacement of more than 1 million people. Israeli forces have reportedly penetrated more than 10 kilometers into Lebanese territory during the current offensive.
