Belfast Road Closures Manage 350,000 Fleadh Cheoil Visitors

The first-ever hosting of Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann in Belfast has triggered a 95% year-on-year increase in city center footfall. More than 350,000 visitors attended the first two days of the musical celebration, with 176,462 people recorded on the opening Sunday and 165,077 on Monday. To manage the surge, Belfast City Council implemented a car-free zone and traffic restrictions around City Hall from August 2 to August 10.

Additional road closures were enacted starting at 5 a.m. on Wednesday, August 5, affecting Wellington Place, Donegall Square North, Donegall Square East, and Donegall Square West. These measures, which remain in place until Sunday evening, were response to high footfall to ensure pedestrian safety. Translink adjusted bus pick-up points and introduced service diversions, while establishing three official park and ride sites to increase capacity after reports of overcrowding on the festival's opening day.

The event was supported by £1 million from the Department for the Economy via Tourism NI. The festival is projected to provide a £53 million economic boost to the local economy, with total attendance expected to reach 800,000 visitors.
