Google Pledges $500 Million to Replenish Data Center Water
Google committed to replenishing more water than its data centers consume by 2030 through infrastructure investments and conservation projects across the U.S. and India.
Google announced a comprehensive water stewardship plan on June 3, 2026, pledging to replenish more water than its data centers consume by 2030. The company is investing $500 million to modernize public water, wastewater, and reuse infrastructure, alongside $17 million for conservation projects across seven U.S. states: Georgia, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, and Texas.
The initiative involves 165 projects across 97 watersheds, aiming to replenish 19 billion gallons annually by 2030, up from 7 billion gallons reported in 2025. Specific projects include wetland restoration in Georgia and Missouri, stormwater mitigation in Michigan, and leak detection in Nebraska. To further reduce impact, Google is deploying air-cooling technology in water-stressed regions and partnering with FluxGen to implement an AI-powered Water Intelligence Suite in Bengaluru schools.
These measures follow rising public and environmental scrutiny regarding the resource demands of AI infrastructure. Bikash Koley, Google's Vice President of Global Infrastructure, defended the use of water cooling by noting it can reduce energy consumption by roughly 10% compared to air cooling. While Ceres noted the progress toward replenishment goals, the nonprofit emphasized that Google must provide more data on how these initiatives measurably protect water supplies in high-stress regions.
