Microsoft Unveils Surface RTX Spark Dev Box for AI Developers

Microsoft announced the Surface RTX Spark Dev Box, a compact desktop providing 1 petaflop of AI compute for local-first software development.

Microsoft Corporation introduced the Surface RTX Spark Dev Box at its Build conference, presenting a compact desktop PC specifically engineered for local-first AI development. The hardware is designed to reduce reliance on cloud costs for agentic workflows and the iteration of complex AI models.

The device is powered by an NVIDIA RTX Spark superchip, which integrates a Blackwell RTX GPU and a Grace CPU. This configuration delivers 1 petaflop of AI compute and 128GB of unified memory, enabling the machine to run local models with over 120 billion parameters.

Housed in a flat aluminum chassis with USB-C, HDMI, and Ethernet ports, the system runs a pre-configured version of Windows 11 Pro. This software environment includes Developer Mode, PowerShell 7, and WSL 2 with CUDA support and GPU passthrough. Microsoft stated the hardware will be available later in 2026, though it did not provide a specific release date or pricing.
