Andy Harris Threatens Journalist After Maryland Congressional Debate
Republican Representative Andy Harris demanded police seize a journalist's camera after a public debate in Cambridge, claiming her recording violated Maryland state law.
Republican Representative Andy Harris clashed with Democratic challenger Dan Schwartz during a candidate forum for Maryland's 1st Congressional District on October 14 at the Chesapeake Grove Intergenerational Center in Cambridge. The candidates debated diesel prices, the Chesapeake Bay Bridge, and the war in Iran. While Harris defended President Donald Trump's military actions, he diverged from the administration by opposing the planned livestream of the execution of Fort Hood shooter Nidal Hasan, agreeing to ask Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth to cancel the broadcast.
Following the debate, Harris engaged in a confrontation with Cat Murphy, a Capital News Service reporter and University of Maryland graduate student. Harris accused Murphy of violating the Maryland Wiretapping and Electronic Surveillance Act, asserting that the state's two-party consent law required his permission for audio and video recording. He demanded that law enforcement intervene to seize Murphy's camera, claiming she was violating the law.
Murphy and other journalists argued that no reasonable expectation of privacy exists in a public forum. Harris eventually terminated the question-and-answer session, stating that Murphy was ruining the experience for other attendees. Dan Schwartz later characterized Harris as out of touch and more interested in picking fights than answering voters. Murphy told CNN she has no intention of stopping her coverage of Harris.
