Representative Liccardo Calls for Bipartisan AI Safety Legislation

U.S. Representative Sam Liccardo is advocating for sensible AI safety regulations to address cybersecurity risks and job market disruptions.

U.S. Representative Sam Liccardo, recently re-elected with over 76% of the vote, is calling for the passage of bipartisan AI safety legislation. He argues that sensible regulation is necessary to mitigate cybersecurity risks within the financial sector and prevent widespread job market disruptions. To avoid the legislative inactivity that plagued previous technology sectors, Liccardo emphasized that any proposed bill must be capable of securing 60 Senate votes.

Liccardo noted that industry leaders at companies such as OpenAI and Anthropic support the implementation of safeguards, challenging the perception that AI safety is antithetical to industry interests. Beyond domestic regulation, he expressed a desire for congressional oversight regarding Elon Musk, specifically concerning the throttling of Starshield in Ukraine.

Simultaneously, the administration's Super Intelligence Task Force is developing AI policy priorities. The task force recommends that the government limit security standards to identified vulnerabilities and apply rules uniformly across all firm sizes to prevent regulatory capture. Additionally, the group suggests focusing on the handling of American data rather than the origin of the AI models themselves.
