Chinese Used Car Sales Nearly Match New Car Volume

China's used car market nearly equaled new car sales in early 2026, driven by rising demand for New Energy Vehicles and expanded online trading platforms.

The China Automobile Dealers Association reports that the Chinese used car market reached near parity with new car sales during the first five months of 2026. Used car transactions totaled 8.095 million units, nearly matching the 8.148 million new car retail sales recorded in the same period.

This growth is primarily fueled by the New Energy Vehicle (NEV) segment, which saw a national penetration rate of 11.6 percent in April 2026. The expansion is supported by a narrowing value retention gap over three years, with gasoline cars at 46.07 percent and NEVs at 44.8 percent. Younger consumers are shifting their priorities toward battery health, factory warranties, and smart cockpit features rather than focusing solely on low prices.

Market accessibility has increased through online trading platforms such as Dongchedi and Guazi, which facilitate nationwide sourcing and delivery. These digital shifts, combined with government trade-in incentive policies and expanding export opportunities, continue to drive the industry's growth.
