Apple Unveils iOS 27 with AI-Powered Siri and Interface Redesign

Following the Worldwide Developers Conference on June 8, 2026, Apple released the developer beta for iOS 27, introducing a comprehensive AI overhaul under the Apple Intelligence brand. The center-piece of the update is the transformation of Siri into a standalone onboard app called Siri AI, which features multimodal capabilities, image understanding, and on-screen content analysis. Senior Vice President Craig Federighi described the upgrade as a more conversational assistant designed to help users manage their daily tasks.

The update introduces a new Liquid Glass user interface and several functional enhancements, including the ability to import physical passes into Apple Wallet, a dedicated recovery menu for software issues, and native custom pass creation. AI-driven tools now allow users to create complex automation workflows via the Describe a Shortcut feature using natural language. The Photos app has been upgraded with semantic search and AI-assisted editing, while Apple Wallet now includes AI-powered bill splitting via Apple Cash.

While the software supports older hardware like the iPhone 11, advanced AI capabilities are restricted to the iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 16, and iPhone 17 lineups. Early beta users reported performance lags and battery drain, which the company attributed to background indexing. Regulatory constraints have prevented the update's availability in the European Union and mainland China. A public beta is expected in July, with a general release scheduled for September 2026. In tandem with the mobile update, Apple announced macOS 27 Golden Gate, which brings similar liquid glass transparency and generative AI tools to the desktop.
