India Data Center Growth Drives Renewable Energy Shortage
India prepares energy policies as data center expansions by hyperscalers drive renewable energy demand toward a projected 32.4 gigawatts by 2030.
Planned data center expansions in India are creating a surge in clean energy demand that local providers expect will outstrip available supply. Renewable energy capacity required for these facilities is projected to double from 16.1 gigawatts this year to 32.4 gigawatts by 2030.
To secure power, hyperscalers are increasingly utilizing long-term power purchase agreements and partnerships. CleanMax Enviro Energy Solutions Ltd. recently partnered with Meta Platforms to develop 837 MW of solar and wind capacity across Rajasthan and Karnataka to ensure the acquisition of 100% of environmental attributes from renewable projects.
The rapid buildout has sparked public backlash in Mumbai, where residents protested billion-dollar data center projects planned by Amazon and Google. In response, Junior IT Minister Jitin Prasada announced that the Indian government is preparing a policy to protect consumers from potential increases in energy bills resulting from this industrial demand.
