Vietnam and Laos Sign 2027 Defence Cooperation Plan
Vietnam and Laos signed a new defence cooperation plan in Hanoi to enhance border management, industry collaboration, and the repatriation of wartime remains.
Phan Van Giang, Vietnam's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defence, and Lao Minister of National Defence Khamliang Outhakaysone signed the Vietnam-Laos defence cooperation plan for 2027 during talks in Hanoi on October 13.
The agreement follows the completion of the 2026 cooperation plan. The new framework prioritizes border management and protection, collaboration within the defence industry, and the repatriation of remains of Vietnamese volunteer soldiers and experts who died in Laos during wartime.
The two ministers also agreed to strengthen political work within their armies and increase mutual support at multilateral forums. This includes expanding cooperation among the militaries of Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia. The meeting took place as part of an official visit by Outhakaysone to Vietnam from October 12 to 15.
