Shopify and Meta Launch AI Agentic Checkout
Shopify and Meta Platforms integrated the Muse AI agent with Shop Pay to enable automated purchases, though Amazon has blocked the tool from its platform.
Meta Platforms launched Muse, a personal AI agent, on September 8, 2026, capable of handling shopping, travel planning, and email writing. The agent reached the top of Apple's App Store and drove Meta's stock to its highest level since October 2025. Meta is monetizing the tool through monthly subscription tiers of $20 and $100.
Shopify Inc. entered a deep partnership with Meta to integrate Muse with the Shop Pay checkout system. This collaboration enables agentic checkout, allowing the AI assistant to browse Shopify-powered stores and complete purchases on a user's behalf. Shopify shares rallied nearly 15% over two days following the announcement, closing at $148.63 on Tuesday, though the stock fell 5% on Wednesday due to profit-taking and market reactions to restrictions from other retailers.
Amazon.com has blocked Muse from its storefront, citing concerns over credential scraping and the degradation of its personalized shopping experience. Amazon argues that third-party agentic tools undermine its internal merchandising and recommendation flows. This conflict highlights a competitive struggle over the reach of agentic checkout technology, as Amazon's restrictions limit the addressable footprint of the Meta-Shopify integration.
