TikTok Refuses Public Hearing After Fatal M9 Motorway Crash

TikTok declined a public Oireachtas committee hearing following a fatal motorway crash that killed five teenagers and sparked a regulatory probe into dangerous driving content.

The Irish media regulator, Coimisiún na Meán, is investigating TikTok after a head-on collision on the M9 motorway in County Kildare killed five teenagers and seriously injured four members of another family. The crash occurred when the teenagers drove the wrong way down the motorway, and videos of the accident were subsequently uploaded to the platform. The regulator has demanded a full account of TikTok's measures to handle reckless driving content to determine if the company breached its obligations.

Following the incident, Alan Kelly, chairman of the Oireachtas Committee on Arts, Media, Communications, Culture and Sport, invited TikTok to appear before the committee on September 23. TikTok declined the public invitation, with head of public policy Susan Moss citing ongoing investigations by An Garda Síochána and the media regulator. The company offered a private briefing instead and argued it should not be the sole industry representative summoned. Alan Kelly described the refusal as a "slap in the face to the Irish public."

Government officials have condemned the trend of young people filming illegal driving for social media engagement. Enterprise Minister Peter Burke stated that children's safety takes priority over tax revenue from social media companies, while Minister for Justice Jim O'Callaghan proposed making wrong-way motorway driving a separate criminal offense. Green Party deputy leader Hazel Chu criticized the government and regulator for failing to address algorithms that amplify toxic content, calling the situation hypocritical as Ireland holds the EU Presidency.
