Scott Wiener Wins San Francisco Congressional Seat
State Senator Scott Wiener declared victory in the race for California's 11th Congressional District, succeeding retiring Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi.
State Senator Scott Wiener declared victory in the race for California's 11th Congressional District, succeeding Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi, who represented the city for 39 years. Early returns showed Wiener leading City Supervisor Connie Chan by 15 points, with 35% of ballots accounted for in the final Tuesday night drop. Wiener will be the first LGBTQ person to represent San Francisco in Congress and has identified affordability as his top priority.
Wiener maintained a significant financial advantage throughout the campaign, outspending Chan by more than 10 million dollars. While both candidates supported AI regulation and Medicare for All, they differed on local urbanism and Israeli arms sales. Chan advocated for a full arms embargo, whereas Wiener supported the continued sale of defensive missile systems. Chan received an endorsement from Nancy Pelosi to attract centrist voters, but was unable to close the gap.
In a separate regional vote, voters in five Bay Area counties are supporting the Regional Transit Measure. As of Tuesday night, 61.4% of counted votes favored the sales tax, which is projected to raise 980 million dollars annually for 14 years to address massive deficits facing public transit agencies.
