Department of Energy Awards Ormat $35 Million for Geothermal Projects
Ormat Technologies will receive approximately $35 million from the U.S. Department of Energy to advance geothermal energy projects in Nevada and Utah.
The U.S. Department of Energy selected Ormat Technologies Inc. to receive approximately $35 million in funding to advance geothermal energy development in the western United States. The funding is split between two primary initiatives aimed at improving the efficiency and viability of geothermal power.
At the Dixie Valley project in Nevada, Ormat will use up to $25 million in partnership with SLB and the University of Utah to design, drill, and validate an Enhanced Geothermal Systems doublet. This project seeks to prove that engineered reservoirs can maintain sustained circulation and provide commercially relevant thermal output.
In Utah, Ormat will collaborate with the University of Utah at the Cove Fort project. This initiative will utilize up to $9.7 million for drilling and subsurface characterization to analyze heat and fluid distribution within carbonate rock formations. The awards remain subject to the completion of negotiations with the Department of Energy.
