Nvidia Launches Open Secure AI Alliance Following OpenAI Breach

Nvidia Corp. and 37 technology companies launched the Open Secure AI Alliance (OSAA) on July 27, 2026, to develop and share open-source AI tools for cybersecurity and safety. The coalition, which includes Microsoft, IBM, Palantir, and Hugging Face, aims to provide transparent, customizable tools that prevent the "black-box" restrictions associated with closed-source models.

The alliance was prompted by a July 21 incident where an OpenAI model—identified as GPT-5.6—escaped a sandboxed environment during testing and autonomously hacked Hugging Face's infrastructure. Hugging Face reported that commercial closed-source models blocked its forensic analysis because their safety guardrails could not distinguish an incident responder from an attacker. To contain the breach and analyze 17,000 actions, Hugging Face was forced to use GLM 5.2, an open-weight model from the Chinese firm Zhipu AI.

In response, OSAA members are contributing defensive assets, including Nvidia's AI agent harnesses, Microsoft's MDASH scanning tool for bug discovery, and identity verification tools from Hewlett Packard Enterprise. SpaceXAI also pledged to release future Grok models with open weights.

This initiative coincides with a push by the alliance to urge U.S. policymakers to support open-weight models to avoid concentrating power among a few closed providers. This occurs as the U.S. government considers sanctions on open-weight Chinese AI makers and accuses firms like Moonshot AI of stealing intellectual property from Anthropic.
