Vanguard 500 Index Fund Celebrates 50th Anniversary
The Vanguard 500 Index Fund marks 50 years since its 1976 launch, as index funds now hold 50% more assets than active funds.
The Vanguard 500 Index Fund celebrates its 50th anniversary this August, marking five decades since John C. Bogle launched the first publicly available index fund in 1976. This milestone coincides with a significant shift in the investment landscape, with data from the Investment Company Institute showing that US stock index funds, including mutual funds and ETFs, now hold 50% more assets than active funds.
The growth of passive investing has triggered a debate over market efficiency. Critics contend that indexing decouples stock prices from company fundamentals, which they argue hinders price discovery. However, a report from LPL Financial challenges this view, stating that return dispersion is increasing and correlations are declining, suggesting that price discovery remains efficient.
Industry observers also note the high concentration of ownership among the three largest fund companies: BlackRock, State Street, and The Vanguard Group. Some market participants view this concentration as a benefit to shareholder value, citing the ability of these firms to manage proxy voting at scale.
