South Carolina Prepares for Republican Senate Runoff Amid Low Turnout

The South Carolina Election Commission issued final voting guidelines as early turnout figures suggest voter fatigue ahead of the August 25 Republican Senate runoff.

The South Carolina Election Commission has issued final instructions for the Special Republican Primary Runoff scheduled for Tuesday, August 25. Polls will operate from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., with officials requiring valid photo IDs and the submission of absentee ballots by the closing time. The commission noted that voters who participated in the June Democratic primaries are ineligible for this runoff.

Early voting concluded on August 21 in the Lowcountry, revealing significantly low participation. In the tri-county area, Dorchester County recorded just under 2,400 votes, while Charleston County and Berkeley County reported 1,600 and 1,538 votes, respectively. Isaac Cramer, executive director of the Charleston County Board of Voter Registration and Elections, attributed the trend to voter fatigue caused by a rapid succession of elections. He expects total turnout to remain below 10%, a decrease from the election held on August 11.

Despite the low early numbers, election officials stated they are fully staffed and prepared for maximum turnout on Election Day. The runoff features candidates Senator Darline Graham and U.S. Representative Ralph Norman.
