Vanguard Growth ETF Outperforms S&P 500 in 14 of 22 Years
The Vanguard Morningstar Growth ETF has beaten the S&P 500 in 14 of the 22 years since its 2004 launch.
The Vanguard Group operates the Vanguard Morningstar Growth ETF (VUG), which has outperformed the S&P 500 in 14 of the 22 years since it began trading in January 2004. The fund maintains a portfolio of 147 large-cap growth stocks, sharing 84% of its holdings with the S&P 500.
The ETF achieves its performance edge through a heavy concentration in the technology sector, which accounts for 69.8% of the fund. Specifically, the Magnificent Seven stocks—Nvidia, Apple, Microsoft, Alphabet, Amazon, Meta Platforms, and Tesla—comprise over 56% of the ETF. These holdings focus on companies driving artificial intelligence and cloud computing.
While this strategy has historically provided higher returns, it introduces greater risk than the broader market index. The fund is particularly susceptible to volatility within the technology sector.
