Greece and Cyprus Mark 52nd Anniversary of Turkish Invasion

Cyprus and the Greek government marked the 52nd anniversary of the 1974 Turkish invasion on July 20, 2026. In Cyprus, air raid sirens sounded at 5:30 a.m. to commemorate the initial landings, while memorial events took place across the Republic of Cyprus. Commemorations extended to the diaspora in Sydney, Australia, where Greek and Cypriot communities held a memorial service attended by Deputy Minister Nicholas Ioannides.

Kyriakos Mitsotakis, the Prime Minister of Greece, condemned the ongoing military presence as an "open wound" and an "illegal occupation." Along with the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mitsotakis reaffirmed support for a bizonal, bicommunal federation with single sovereignty. He stated that the goal is a reunited Cyprus, free from occupying troops and outdated guarantee systems.

These events occur as UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres prepares for a visit from July 27 to 29 to attempt to revive peace talks. Negotiations remain deadlocked, with Greek Cypriots seeking reunified federation and Turkey and Turkish Cypriot leadership advocating for two sovereign states. President Nikos Christodoulides expressed hope that conditions would be created for the resumption of these negotiations.
