Iowa Mother Urges Senator Grassley to Subpoena Meta Data
Katie Townsend requested Senator Charles Grassley subpoena Meta's algorithm data following the suicide of her 16-year-old daughter.
Katie Townsend, a mother from Iowa, has requested that Senator Charles Grassley subpoena algorithm data from Meta, the parent company of Instagram. The request follows the suicide of Townsend's 16-year-old daughter, who reportedly recorded a video claiming that social media algorithms were negatively affecting her mental state.
This request comes as the United States continues to discuss limiting app access for minors. Data from the Pew Research Center indicates that a majority of Americans support a ban on social media for children under 16.
International efforts to implement similar restrictions have faced challenges. UNICEF reports that an under-16 social media ban in Australia has largely failed, and a judge blocked a similar attempt in France. Senator Grassley has not yet indicated whether he will pursue the subpoena against Meta.
