TigerDC Withdraws $3 Billion Project Spero Data Center Proposal

TigerDC withdrew its proposal for Project Spero, a $3 billion data center in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, on February 27, 2026. The company pulled the application shortly before the Spartanburg County Council was scheduled to vote on denying property tax incentives for the development.

Although the project had received approval in earlier readings, council members reversed their positions following a statewide debate on data center regulations and intense community opposition. The reversal included a shift in stance by Council Chair Manning Lynch. Councilmember Monier Abusaft noted that while the project's water systems were safe, the local government needed to pause to address public distrust.

TigerDC had attempted to mitigate concerns over power grid strain and water usage by proposing a self-contained power strategy and a closed-loop cooling system. In its withdrawal statement, the company cited a lack of alignment among stakeholders and announced it would evaluate alternative sites for the investment.
