British Pound Hits Highest Level Since Brexit Referendum

The British pound reached its highest value against major currencies since 2016, driven by a weakening US dollar and expected UK interest rate hikes.

The British pound reached its highest overall level against a basket of major currencies since the June 2016 Brexit referendum. According to the Bank of England's sterling effective exchange rate index, the value hit 86.5372 on Wednesday.

The surge follows a Democratic victory in the United States midterm elections, which weakened the US dollar by reducing political uncertainty and easing concerns over the US fiscal trajectory. The pound also gained value based on expectations that the Bank of England's Monetary Policy Committee would raise interest rates on Thursday, marking the first such increase in over three years.

Market analysts attribute the currency's strength to the United Kingdom's relative political stability, solid economic growth, and improving diplomatic relations with the European Union.
