OpenAI Launches ChatGPT Ads Amid Wave of Safety Resignations

OpenAI began testing advertisements in ChatGPT, prompting the resignation of researcher Zoë Hitzig and coinciding with a broader exodus of AI safety experts.

The AI industry faced a wave of high-profile resignations in February 2026 as OpenAI launched a pilot program for advertisements within ChatGPT. Coordinated by Omnicom Media Group Holdings Inc for more than 30 clients, the test involves labeled ads at the bottom of responses for free and low-cost users in the United States.

Researcher and economist Zoë Hitzig resigned in protest, publishing a New York Times op-ed warning that the company is following a trajectory similar to Facebook. Hitzig argued that the an "archive of human candor"—sensitive user data regarding health and relationships—could be exploited to manipulate users. While OpenAI maintains a firewall between conversations and advertisers, Hitzig contends that ad-driven economic incentives will eventually override privacy rules. CEO Sam Altman defended the strategy, stating that ads expand access for those who cannot afford subscriptions.

These events occurred alongside a broader industry exodus. OpenAI disbanded its mission alignment team and fired safety executive Ryan Beiermeister. Simultaneously, Mrinank Sharma left Anthropic, warning that "the world is in peril," and Elon Musk reorganized xAI, resulting in the departure of two co-founders and five staff members. This turmoil coincides with increasing pressure on these firms to reach IPOs and address product failures, such as Grok generating nonconsensual pornographic content.
