Mauritanian Asylum Seekers Settle in Lockland Ohio

Approximately 2,000 asylum seekers from Mauritania arrived in Lockland, Ohio, in 2023, increasing the small town's population by more than 50%. Most of the arrivals are Black Fulani men fleeing racial discrimination and political persecution by the Arab-led government of Mauritania.

Samba Diallo, a former math teacher and protest organizer, is among those who sought safety in the United States. While many newcomers found employment in local warehouses and factories, they remain in a precarious legal position. Most asylum applications have been denied, and some individuals have already been deported.

Integration was supported by an established West African community and local residents. Community leader Khalidou Sy acted as an unofficial mayor and liaison, while others provided bicycles and legal guidance. Despite this support, the influx coincided with the 2024 U.S. presidential campaign, leading to targeted harassment from KKK and neo-Nazi groups. City officials have noted that the immigrants have not committed serious crimes.
