Instagram Mandates Labels for AI-Generated Profiles
Instagram is requiring AI-generated profiles to self-identify with a specific tag or face exclusion from recommendation algorithms like Reels and Explore.
Instagram is implementing a crackdown on AI-generated profiles that masquerade as real humans by requiring them to self-identify. The platform is replacing the AI Creator label with a more specific Profile generated by AI tag to distinguish synthetic identities from human creators who use AI tools.
Meta will proactively identify suspected AI profiles and notify them to add the label. Accounts that fail to comply will be excluded from recommendation algorithms, specifically Reels and Explore. This penalty limits an account's ability to reach non-followers and grow its audience, although existing followers can still view the content.
The policy targets accounts where the central identity is artificial rather than individual pieces of content modified by AI tools. Affected users can contest the classification through the Account Status section of the platform.
