Amazon Delivery Vehicles Receive 14,000 NYC Traffic Citations

Amazon delivery vehicles received more than 14,000 traffic citations and were involved in roughly 13,000 idling incidents in New York City between July 2020 and June 2025. A report by The Alliance for a Greater New York found that violations included speeding in school zones and obstructing emergency vehicles and fire hydrants.

Samuel A.A. Levine, Commissioner of the Department of Consumer and Worker Protection, used the data to urge the New York City Council to pass the Delivery Protection Act. The proposed legislation would require Amazon to directly employ its delivery workers rather than using third-party contractors. Levine stated that the current data shows an economy that rewards exploitation and shields powerful corporations from responsibility.

Amazon opposes the legislation, arguing that its Delivery Service Partners are responsible for driver compliance and associated costs. A company spokesperson said Amazon promotes safety through its Last Mile Training Academy and is investing in on-foot delivery and cargo ebikes as alternatives.
