Democratic Midterm Sweep Threatens SoftBank Data Center Projects

SoftBank Group faces increased financial and political risks for its Stargate data center program following a Democratic sweep in the U.S. midterm elections.

A Democratic sweep in the U.S. midterm elections has created significant political and financial headwinds for SoftBank Group Corp. and its $500 billion Stargate program. While federal gridlock is expected to limit national legislative obstacles, the company faces acute risks at the state level, particularly in Texas.

Governor-elect Gina Hinojosa has signaled intentions to halt new data center projects and terminate tax breaks. This stance directly threatens a 1.2 GW campus that SB Energy is constructing for OpenAI in Milam County. Similar political pressure exists in Georgia, where Democratic candidates campaigned on data center moratoriums.

Operational challenges are already impacting other sites. In New Mexico, power delays at Project Jupiter led Oracle to issue a force-majeure notice. Following the election, SoftBank's stock and several power-sector companies slumped. Analysts warn that the combination of permitting delays, the repeal of tax incentives, and reduced lender appetite could increase costs and slow construction timelines for the massive infrastructure initiative.
