Canadian Household Financial Hardship Rises to 29.7 Percent

Statistics Canada reports that nearly 30 percent of Canadians struggle to meet basic financial needs, marking the first annual increase in hardship since 2022.

Nearly 30 percent of Canadians aged 15 and older lived in households struggling to meet basic financial needs in October 2026, according to data from Statistics Canada. The agency reported a financial hardship rate of 29.7 percent, representing a 2 percentage point increase over the previous 12 months.

This shift marks the first annual rise in financial strain since 2022 and reverses a three-year downward trend. The reported hardship includes difficulties affording essential needs such as food, housing, transportation, and clothing.

Financial strain is most concentrated in the industrial hubs of Southern Ontario. Oshawa recorded the highest rate of hardship at 38.4 percent, followed by Windsor at 36.9 percent and Hamilton at 35.9 percent. Statistics Canada noted that these three cities also experienced unemployment rates that exceeded the national average during the same period.
