Negeri Sembilan Voters Cast Ballots in Snap State Election

More than 850,000 voters in Negeri Sembilan cast ballots on August 1, 2026, in snap elections for the 36-seat state legislative assembly. The polls followed the June 5 dissolution of the assembly, which was triggered by a political crisis involving the state's royal institution and the withdrawal of support for Menteri Besar Aminuddin Harun by 14 Umno assemblymen.

Pakatan Harapan contested all 36 seats independently, with Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim leading campaigns focused on federal stability and anti-corruption. Opposing them was a strategic partnership between Barisan Nasional, which fielded candidates in 25 seats, and Perikatan Nasional, which contested 11. Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi led the Barisan Nasional effort, focusing on the Malay-Muslim agenda. Additionally, Bersatu contested 24 seats independently under its own logo despite remaining a component party of Perikatan Nasional.

The Election Commission of Malaysia reported a voter turnout of 65.38% as of 4 p.m., exceeding the 61.89% recorded at the same time during the August 2023 elections. Officials targeted a final turnout between 72% and 75%. Key campaign issues centered on the cost of living, infrastructure, and the declassification of the Royal Commission of Inquiry report into Tabung Haji.
