Assam Congress Urges Modi to Declare Flood Crisis National Problem

A delegation from the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC), led by Pranjit Das, met with Governor Lakshman Acharya on Wednesday to demand that the recurrent flood and river erosion crisis in Assam be declared a national problem. The delegation submitted a memorandum addressed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other union ministers, arguing that the scale of the crisis exceeds the capacity of the state government.

The memorandum highlights that approximately 40% of Assam's land area is flood-prone. The APCC attributes this vulnerability to climate change, embankment breaches, and heavy siltation within the Brahmaputra and Barak river basins. The organization asserts that temporary relief measures are insufficient for a lasting solution.

To address the crisis, the APCC is calling for the creation of a high-level Task Force and the allocation of central funds for a comprehensive Master Plan. This proposed plan would include scientific dredging, real-time forecasting, and planned rehabilitation for families displaced by erosion and flooding.
