Amazon Weighs Multibillion-Dollar Investment Expansion in Anthropic

Amazon.com, Inc. entered talks on July 10 to expand its existing investment in the artificial intelligence firm Anthropic. The potential multibillion-dollar injection follows a previous $8 billion commitment made in November 2024 and a total investment of approximately $13.8 billion, primarily through convertible notes. This move is intended to ensure Amazon remains one of Anthropic's largest shareholders and maintains a lead over Google, which has invested more than $3 billion.

To preserve its independence, Anthropic has reportedly capped the stakes held by both Amazon and Google at under 33%. The partnership extends beyond funding into technical collaboration on AI chip development and go-to-market initiatives. A central component of this alliance is Project Rainier, a massive data center campus in New Carlisle, Indiana. The project has expanded to 30 data centers with an estimated power draw of 2.2 gigawatts, utilizing custom AWS Trainium2 chips to support Anthropic's AI models, including the recently released Claude 4 Opus.

By deepening this alliance, Amazon seeks to bolster its reputation in generative AI to better compete with rivals like Google and OpenAI. This strategy mirrors high-stakes industry partnerships, such as the relationship between Microsoft and OpenAI, as Amazon leverages its technical infrastructure to maintain a competitive edge.
