Nigeria Denies Supporting Failed Coup in Niger Republic
The Government of Nigeria rejected social media allegations that it and ECOWAS supported a failed coup attempt in the Niger Republic.
The Government of Nigeria categorically denied social media reports alleging that it and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) supported a recent failed coup attempt in the Niger Republic. Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Sola Enikanolaiye issued a statement on Thursday describing the claims as baseless and intended to tarnish the nation's reputation.
Enikanolaiye reaffirmed Nigeria's commitment to the ECOWAS Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance and the African Union's zero-tolerance policy toward unconstitutional changes of government. He stated that Nigeria remains opposed to using force to settle political differences and continues to advocate for a peaceful, inclusive process to restore constitutional order in Niger, citing the close historical and cultural ties between the two nations.
